Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is a condition where the gastric juices and acids present in the stomach travel upwards into the oesophagus.
GERD symptoms are caused by the corrosive effect of the acid which result in the irritation and inflammation of the oesophagus. The disease is an unpleasant and uncomfortable condition that is characterized by many GERD symptoms. Recurrent GERD symptoms can lead to serious illnesses.
The more common of GERD symptoms are as follows:
GERD Symptoms #1 – Heartburn:
Heartburn is common among GERD symptoms and can be described as an unpleasant, burning sensation that seems to rise from the lower chest and continues all the way up to the throat.
When gastric acid from the stomach backs up the oesophagus, it irritates the sensitive nerves and tissues of the oesophagus, causing a burning pain which is the most marked among GERD symptoms.
However in certain patients, GERD symptoms do not include a burning irritation. Instead it stimulates a sudden and sharp pain that sometimes even extends to the back, completely overpowering the person suffering from GERD symptoms.
Heartburn is usually triggered after a meal, or while lying down after a meal. For certain patients, GERD symptoms include waking from sleep due to the intense heartburn they experience. Heartburn episodes surface with periodic regularity, sometimes the pain is very frequent for some time. When the period of frequent pain has passed, the heartburn occurs few and far times in between. Despite the length of time that has passed since the last heartburn attack, it always resurfaces.
GERD Symptoms #2 – Regurgitation:
Regurgitation is another of the GERD symptoms that is widespread. It refers to the washed up acid of the stomach appearing in the mouth.
When the stomach refluxes the acidic mixture of partially digested food, water and bile up the oesophageal tube, usually most of the acid remains in the lower oesophagus and only negligible quantities of acid travels all the way up to the mouth. But in some reported GERD symptoms, higher volumes of the acid find their way into the mouth, leaving a bitter acidic taste in the mouth.
The throat is protected from the reflux of this bile by a valve similar to the lower oesophagus sphincter (LES) called the upper oesophagus sphincter (UES). In extreme or recurrent cases of regurgitation when the refluxed acid of the stomach breaks through the UES, it may also cause the corrosion of the teeth by the acid.
GERD Symptom #3 – Chest pain:
Chest pain experienced by persons suffering from GERD symptoms is due to the corrosive effect of the acid on the oesophagus. In GERD symptoms, heartburn often translates in painful aches in the chest as the sensitive nerves and tissues of the throat are attacked by the acid.
GERD Symptom #4 – Dysphagia:
Several patients complain of dysphagia as one of their GERD symptoms. Dysphagia refers to a difficulty in eating or swallowing due to GERD disease.
Persons with GERD symptoms such as dysphagia may find it hard to swallow because the esophagus is weak after attempts to fight acidic attacks from the stomach.
GERD Symptom #5 – Choked or hoarse voice:
The mouth, air and throat passages become inflamed and tender following the acidic infiltration. As a result of GERD symptoms like this, the voice of the GERD disease patient becomes slightly hoarse and strained.
If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, it is possible that you have GERD disease.
